It was the western gateway to Naples: merchants, travelers, and pilgrims passed through here, crossing the first tunnel carved out by the Romans to connect Naples with the Phlegraean Fields, known as the Crypta Neapolitana.
It is still visible today, though no longer accessible. The neighborhood takes its name from its position “outside the grotto,” in the local dialect Forerotta.

Fuorigrotta began as
The current topography is the result of the Fascist redevelopment that began in 1925 and was completed in the mid-1950s - the architecture of several buildings still bears witness to this.

All of this has effectively made this neighborhood the center of Neapolitan sports and fair events, as well as a venue for concerts and conferences.

par excellence, home to the scientific faculties of the University of Naples Federico II;
the Faculty of Sports Science of the Parthenope University; the CNR; and the PICO - the Palace of Innovation and Knowledge.
Here we also find the RAI Production Center, which houses the Historical Archive of Neapolitan Song and an auditorium.
The neighborhood preserves evidence from the Roman Era, as well as a Piperno Stele from 1789 that documents the presence of a sanitary checkpoint.

The former Church of San Vitale Martire, located in an adjacent area and demolished in 1939 for urban planning needs, housed the Tomb of the poet Giacomo Leopardi. His remains were moved beforehand to the Vergilian Park, which already contained the Tomb of the poet Virgil.
The square in front of the Church, previously named Piazza Leopardi, became Piazza San Vitale, and in honor of the poet, the first station of the “direttissima” railway line was named Piazza Leopardi.
Moreover, inside the monumental Church of San Vitale Martire, the protector of the neighborhood, you can admire two enormous paintings by Luca Giordano: “The Triumph of Judith” and “The Triumph of David.”
